Oliver Chambers’ Everesting Challenge

January 14, 2022

Oliver Chambers, from Port Erin, has set himself a huge challenge to raise funds for mental health support on the Island by running the height of Mount Everest (8,848 metres).

Oliver’s challenge will involve him running up Eary Cushlin, in the West of the Island, and then carry on up to the summit of Cronk ny Arrey Laa, which is a 1.17 mile route with a gruelling average gradient of 20.5%.  He will need to climb this rough and rocky route 22 times, and then descend again the same way, meaning that he will run a total of 51 miles.

Oliver has chosen the 29th January 2022, his birthday, to undertake the challenge so will only have just over eight and a half hours of daylight and the rest of the challenge will have the added difficulty of being in the dark.

John Keggin, Owner of Island Escapes, which is supporting the challenge, said “This is a huge challenge that Oliver has set himself but he is very determined so I am sure that he will give it his best.  Of course, challenges such as these require huge mental strength, so it is very fitting that Oliver has chosen to fundraise for Isle Listen”.

Oliver admitted that it will be gruelling when he said “I have been training hard as this is going to challenge me both physically and mentally.  It will test my resolve and resilience and I can’t think of a better way to spend my birthday.  The thought of cake at the end will help to keep me going!”.

Oliver is raising funds for Isle Listen, the leading local mental health charitable organisation that provides support and training in schools, the workplace and community, helping people to recognise that mental health is just as important as physical health.  You can support him by sponsoring him on his JustGiving page: https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/oliver-chambers2
